Child Support in Los Angeles

In the early 2000’s in the United States, almost one-quarter of all children were born to unmarried parents since nearly half of all marriages ended in divorce. Most of the children who lived in single-parent families had a legal right to a child support order. Child support means court-ordered payments, generally made by a noncustodial divorced parent, to support one’s minor child or children. Child support payments are determined by a court of law and are based on the income level of the other parent. The California Courts have the guidelines for child support laws. The purposes of the guideline are to provide for a minimum level of child support for a child and to provide for uniformity in the calculation of child support. The statewide Child Support Guideline can be found at California Family Code Section 4050.

The California family court sets child support amounts by following the California child support laws that are supposed to determine what is in the best interest of the child. In general, a parent’s duty to support a minor child continues until the child reaches age of 18. Child support in Los Angeles, California is calculated using the state guidelines that consider numerous factors, including:

 Number of children

 Parenting time spent with each parent

 Net income each parent earns

 Tax consequences

 Health insurance and child care costs

The parents are also required to continue with their responsibility if the child is incapacitated and unable to earn a sufficient living under the California Child Support Law.
